A Custom Basement Full Bath and Exercise Room in Prince William County

Unused basement space, turned into two rooms the homeowners actually use: a full bathroom built from the studs with a tiled walk-in shower, and a home exercise room next door. Here is how it came together.

A bathroom built from the studs

There was no bathroom here to remodel - just open basement. Adding a full bath below grade is real construction: running drain lines and vents, rough-in plumbing and electrical, then framing and waterproofing before a single tile goes up. The shower was built on a mortared pan and wrapped in cement board so the tile has a solid, water-managed base behind it.

Being both the electrician and the remodeler helps on a job like this, where the wiring, the plumbing coordination, and the finish work all have to line up.

The walk-in shower

The centerpiece is a curbless walk-in shower, tiled floor to ceiling in marble-look large-format tile with a dark mosaic accent band. It has a built-in bench, a recessed niche, a terrazzo-style mosaic floor, and a rain head set into the ceiling between two lights. Curbless means nothing to step over - easier to use now, and easier to age with later.

An exercise room next door

The rest of the space became a home gym. We framed and finished the room, put in recessed lighting, and ran power and a wall mount for the TV so it is ready for equipment. Pairing it with the full bath is what makes it work: you can work out and clean up without going upstairs.

Who built it

This basement was built out by Anson Electrical & Remodeling, a family-owned company that has worked in Northern Virginia for 20+ years. Founder Brad Anson - a Virginia Master Electrician (License #2705178102) and Class B Builder - sets the standards the team works to, on every job, big or small.

Adding a bathroom to a basement pulls in framing, plumbing, electrical, and tile all at once, and it is permit territory - so the process matters. This one ran the way all of ours do: a consultation, then a written proposal with scope, timeline, and cost before any work began, with permits pulled by us where the work required them and a final walkthrough at the end. A named project manager ran it, and the work was done by our own licensed in-house team, not anonymous subcontractors carrying the Anson name.

We hold a 5.0 rating on Google, and a good share of our remodeling work comes from repeat customers and the neighbors they send our way.
